Americans can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without applying for a visa in advance.

what you need

how the days count

  1. Arrive in the Schengen Area on 1 June โ€” that's day 1 (entry and exit days both count).
  2. Your last legal day is 29 August (day 90).
  3. Once those 90 days are used, every day counts back 180 days. After a full 90-day stay you need 90 days outside โ€” the earliest date you could come back for another full 90-day stay is 28 November.
  4. Leaving and re-entering does not reset the count. Short trips in between still add up.

if you overstay

Overstaying the 90/180 limit in Schengen can result in fines (typically โ‚ฌ500-โ‚ฌ1,000+), entry bans (1 to 5 years), and being flagged in the SIS database. Since EES went live in April 2026, overstays are detected automatically.

questions people ask

How long can Americans stay in Europe?

Americans can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The limit is shared across all 29 Schengen countries, not counted per country.

Does leaving the Schengen Area reset the 90 days?

No. The rule looks back over the last 180 days from every day you are in the zone. Days only "come back" as they fall out of that window.

Do the UK and Ireland count toward the 90 days?

No. The United Kingdom and Ireland are outside the Schengen Area and have their own separate limits.
